The Smart Choice for Seattle-Area Homes

Composition shingles, also called asphalt or architectural shingles, are the most popular roofing material in the Pacific Northwest for good reason. They deliver an excellent balance of affordability, durability, and curb appeal, with dozens of color and style options to match any home.

At K Single Corp, we’ve installed thousands of composition shingle roofs across the Greater Seattle Area. We’re certified installers for Malarkey, CertainTeed, and GAF, and we only install architectural-grade shingles, never the thinner, less durable 3-tab variety.

Why Composition Shingles Work Well in Seattle

The Pacific Northwest climate presents specific challenges for roofing: heavy rainfall from October through April, occasional windstorms, temperature swings between freezing and 90°F, and persistent moisture that promotes moss growth.

Modern architectural shingles are engineered to handle all of these conditions. The best options for our climate include:

  • Algae-resistant granules that inhibit moss and algae growth (Malarkey’s polymer-modified asphalt is especially effective)
  • Class 3-4 impact ratings that withstand hail and debris from windstorms
  • 130+ mph wind ratings that hold up during November and December storms
  • SBS-modified asphalt that stays flexible in cold weather instead of cracking

Cost Breakdown

For a typical 2,000-2,500 sq ft home in the Seattle area, a full composition shingle roof replacement including tear-off, underlayment, and installation runs approximately:

  • Standard architectural shingles: $12,000 - $16,000
  • Premium architectural shingles: $15,000 - $20,000
  • Designer/luxury shingles: $18,000 - $25,000+

These ranges include all labor, materials, permits, and disposal. The exact price depends on roof complexity (valleys, dormers, skylights), number of existing layers to remove, and any deck repair needed.

Our Installation Standards

Every composition shingle installation by K Single Corp follows these standards, no exceptions:

  1. Full tear-off to bare deck (we never overlay)
  2. Complete deck inspection with rotted sheathing replacement
  3. Ice-and-water shield in all valleys, eaves, and around penetrations
  4. Premium synthetic underlayment across the entire roof
  5. Starter strip at eaves and rakes
  6. Manufacturer-spec nailing pattern (6 nails per shingle in high-wind zones)
  7. Ridge vent or equivalent ventilation system
  8. Step and counter-flashing at all wall transitions
  9. New pipe boots and vent flashings
  10. Final cleanup with magnetic nail sweep

Composition Shingle Roofing FAQ

What's the difference between 3-tab and architectural shingles?

3-tab shingles are flat, uniform, and less expensive, but they're thinner, less durable, and look dated on most homes. Architectural (dimensional) shingles have a layered, textured appearance that mimics wood shake or slate. They're thicker, more wind-resistant (130+ mph), and carry longer warranties (30-50 years vs. 20-25 years). We recommend architectural shingles for every residential project.

Which shingle brands do you install?

We're certified installers for Malarkey, CertainTeed, and GAF, the three leading shingle manufacturers. Malarkey is our most popular choice for Seattle-area homes because their rubberized asphalt formulation resists moss and algae growth better than standard shingles. CertainTeed Landmark is another excellent option with a wide color selection.

How long do composition shingles last in the Seattle climate?

In the Pacific Northwest, a quality architectural shingle roof typically lasts 25-40 years with proper ventilation and maintenance. Factors that affect lifespan include: attic ventilation (poor ventilation shortens life by 5-10 years), moss/debris removal frequency, and sun exposure (south-facing slopes age faster). Premium shingles with algae-resistant granules last longer in our climate.

Can you install shingles over an existing roof?

We never recommend roofing over existing layers. While building code in Washington allows up to two layers, overlay installations hide deck damage, void most manufacturer warranties, and create moisture problems in our wet climate. Every K Single Corp shingle installation starts with a full tear-off and deck inspection.

What shingle colors work best for Pacific Northwest homes?

For PNW homes, mid-tone colors like Weathered Wood, Driftwood, and Charcoal are the most popular. Darker colors hide moss staining better but absorb more heat. Lighter colors reflect heat but show staining faster. We bring physical samples to your home so you can see colors against your siding, trim, and landscaping.

What maintenance does a shingle roof need in the Pacific Northwest?

In the PNW, you should have your shingle roof inspected annually and clear debris from valleys and gutters at least twice a year. Moss treatment with a zinc or copper solution every 1-2 years is also important, since our damp climate accelerates moss growth. Keeping overhanging branches trimmed back reduces shade and debris, which helps shingles dry faster and last longer.

What roof pitch is required for composition shingles?

Composition shingles require a minimum pitch of 2:12 (two inches of rise for every twelve inches of run). Steeper pitches of 4:12 and above are ideal because they shed water and debris faster, which extends shingle life in the rainy Pacific Northwest. For roofs below 2:12 pitch, we recommend a flat or low-slope system like TPO instead.

What underlayment and ventilation do shingle roofs need in Seattle?

We install premium synthetic underlayment across the entire roof deck, plus ice-and-water shield membrane in all valleys, eaves, and around penetrations. Proper ridge and soffit ventilation is critical in the PNW because trapped moisture in the attic causes premature shingle failure and wood rot. Without adequate ventilation, even a premium shingle roof can lose 5-10 years of service life.

How do composition shingles hold up in Pacific Northwest windstorms?

Modern architectural shingles are rated for winds of 130 mph or higher, which exceeds the wind speeds in most PNW storms. The key is proper nailing, and we use a six-nail pattern per shingle in high-wind zones as required by manufacturer specs. Starter strips along eaves and rakes provide an additional seal that prevents wind-driven uplift at the most vulnerable edges.

How long does a shingle roof installation take?

A standard shingle roof replacement on a typical Seattle-area home takes 2-4 days, depending on roof size and complexity. Simple ranch-style roofs with minimal penetrations can be completed in as little as 2 days, while multi-story homes with dormers, valleys, and skylights may take 4 days. We plan installations around weather windows and will pause work if heavy rain is expected.

How easy is it to repair a damaged shingle roof?

Shingle roofs are one of the easiest roofing types to repair. Individual damaged shingles can be lifted and replaced without disturbing the surrounding roof, which keeps repair costs low. Most minor repairs like replacing a few wind-damaged or cracked shingles cost between $200 and $500 and can be completed in a single visit.

Are composition shingles energy efficient?

Standard shingles are moderate in energy efficiency, but cool-roof rated shingles with reflective granules can reduce attic temperatures by 20-30 degrees in summer. In the PNW, proper attic ventilation and insulation matter more than shingle color for overall energy performance. Some utility programs in the Seattle area offer rebates for cool-roof rated shingle products.

Can a shingle roof qualify for homeowner's insurance discounts?

Yes, many insurance companies offer discounts of 5-15% for impact-resistant shingles rated Class 3 or Class 4. We install Class 3 and Class 4 rated architectural shingles that qualify for these discounts with most major carriers in Washington state. The annual insurance savings can offset a meaningful portion of the difference between standard and impact-rated shingles over the roof's lifetime.

How do composition shingles compare to metal roofing for Seattle homes?

Composition shingles cost roughly half as much upfront and work well on complex roof lines with valleys and dormers. Metal roofing lasts roughly twice as long and requires almost no maintenance, which can make it cheaper over a 50-plus year period. Shingles are the better choice if budget is the priority, while metal is the better long-term investment for homeowners who plan to stay in their home.
